The coming Friday will witness the release of former showman Subhash Ghai`s magnum opus, `Yuvvraaj`. The movie looks grand, Rahman`s music is of a high quality and the big star cast, comprising Anil Kapoor, Salman Khan, Zayed Khan and Katrina Kaif, all look great on paper. Unfortunately, the excitement and hype that should have been there for such a lavish project is surprisingly missing.

Last Friday saw Karan Johar`s Tarun Mansukhani directed `Dostana`, the Abhishek, John, Priyanka and Bobby (special appearance) laugh riot, being released at 91 cinemas of Bombay–Thane thru Yash Raj Film Distributors and was off to an excellent start. Outside of Bombay, the opening was excellent in the big cities but fair elsewhere. Trade predicts that the film will find friends in the cities (the most important being Bombay and the Overseas circuit) but their patronage won`t be enough to recover the high 52 crore price on an all–India level. `Dostana` has also opened to a great start in the Overseas.

The other release of last Friday, Vinay Pathak`s Shashant Shah directed `Dasvidaniya` was released at around 30 cinemas of Bombay–Thane thru Rajat Enterprises and was off to a poor start. In other circuits, the opening was similar. Trade predicts that `Dasvidaniya` may be a sensitive and sincere attempt but it has little commercial value and may, therefore go almost unnoticed at the box–office.

Sanjay Dutt`s `EMI` just failed to achieve anything significant, barring to an extent Bombay. The Balaji Motion Picture Ltd. and Popcorn Motion Picture Pvt. Ltd. venture has turned out to be a heavy loser.

The movie that released with `EMI`, Rajshri`s `Ek Vivaah... Aisa Bhi`, could not pick up significantly despite strong emotional content. It may show some significant gains in the coming weeks because the film has gone in for a limited release and so many regions are still to see its release.

The first `Diwali` release, Madhur Bhandarkar`s `Fashion` crashed all over, though Bombay held on quite well. The film with a distribution cost of around 23–24 crores, is just about reaching an average status in India. And for that its worldwide distributors, UTV Motion Pictures have to rely on its non–theatrical revenues. In the Overseas, `Fashion` found no takers.

The second `Diwali` release, Rohit Shetty`s `Golmaal Returns` did well during the second weekend but crashed heavily thereafter. Given the fact that `Golmaal Returns` cost 35 crores to make and was sold for a princely sum of 45 crores, the film just about manages to get into the profit zone. In the Overseas`Golmaal Returns` has done well in the UK but has been rejected in the US.
