It is very rare that one comes across a movie with so much potential that actually sees it through - Dil Chahta Hai is a commendable movie.

Its negatives include the bit role of Saif Ali Khan. He was amazingly good - I cannot remember when it was last that I laughed as much. For instance when the two guys unite at the end, I would probably have made the most out of Saif's expressions if this were to be a truly male bonding experience.

After Taal, my impressions of Akshaye were fairly horrible, but he comes up with a surprise.

And it is wise of the director to chose Aamir to essay the most conventional role as he is probably the only one who would lend it the unconventionality that is the essence of the movie.

Preity and Dimple did very well but of course they had to be sidelined -one day I'd like to see a movie where "love interest" isn't all the woman is made out to be. (i take that back slightly,Dimple definitely had a fairly meaty role.)

Another great thing about this movie, for me was not using background sound to complement the emotions all the time - it is in their rawness that emotions become, well, raw and I believe that the cacophony that ensues in the background is the biggest flaw of most hindi movies.

Perhaps what we now need is the same stark reality to depict even potboilers and movies that perhaps might be more in sync with rural, poor or both neighborhoods.
