After a recent cop movie release, Champion, for Sunny Deol, Farz is added to the long, stagnant list, failing to create any sort of ripple at the box office. With acutely familiar scenes from Hollywood´s Lethal Weapon, among other films, one can hardly say that the film has anything more to offer than the typical run-of-the-mill dishum dishum cop movie, inclusive of a few catchy songs on the otherwise mediocre album.

Hero: ACP Karan (Deol), a fearless, justice first cop who has no one tied to his name, hence, his concern is only to destroy evil before it destroys good.

Sidekick: A reluctant sidekick, by default. ACP Arjun Singh (Om Puri), his partner and quite to opposite in bravery, as he has seen his friend (Dara Singh), suffer the fate of death in the quest for justice, and fears for his family. He opposes ACP Karan´s approach, often bringing them in conflict.

Heroine: Kajal (Preity Zinta), ACP Singh´s pretty daughter who is won over by ACP Karan´s bravery and fearlessness. Father is opposed to their love. Doesn´t do much but sing and dance, though she is capable of much more.

Villians: Gawa Firozi (Jackie Shroff) and his brother, Sikandar (Mukesh Tiwari), underworld dons, drug lords, feared gundas, whatever you want to call them.

ACP Karan takes on the underworld, hence bumping heads with Gawa Firozi and Sikandar. Scuffles follow, courtcase against Sikandar for murder also develops, Kajal as a witness to the murder, and more scuffles surrounding Gawa´s attempt to allow his bhai Sikandar to escape, resulting in dishum dishum! And down with Sikandar! Off to jail for Gawa! Gawa then plots revenge against now DCP Karan, for Sikandar´s death, and the story ends there as action and more action kicks in.

Plot: Ordinary. Nothing new, nothing exciting, just Sunny Deol at it again. The fact that it is Sunny Deol as a cop relieves some of the ordinariness to it, since he is a perfect action hero, but the story itself had nothing to offer.

Acting: Sunny Deol is just too good in action films, as his intensity is always evident in each scene. On the flip side, this role for him has become second nature, offering no challenge to his acting abilities. Preity Zinta was good in her small role, though her role was not sketched out well to give her enough scope in accordance to her acting ability, clumping her in the likes of the sing and dance heroines (and Bollywood has all too many). Om Puri was also good in a restrained role. The interactions between Deol and Puri were commendable. Jackie Shroff was impressive, though his villian role came too close to the one in Mission Kashmir.

Songs: Bichua Bichua was already a pathetic, horrible song, why make it worse by putting Pooja Batra in the song? Jhanak Jhanak Baaje and Dhola Dhola (the latter fulfilling the Deol quota of one Punjabi song in every movie) were good, and Aelo Aelo Ji was cute and well-suited for Preity to carry off. Sunny Deol dancing, well, was one of the highlights of the film.

Overall, the movie made a decent entertainer though it fails to offer anything more than the typical cop action film. Good timepass flick.
