Being a guy, a film about male strippers isn’t exactly my cup of tea. Forced by the ladies among my friends, I reluctantly sat down to watch "Oops!" How bad could it possibly be? A very original plot, a first time director raring to digress from conventions, and a fresh cast. Deepak Tijori started the film off on the right foot but somewhere along the way, he must have looked at it and said, "Oops!" The premise is quite simple really. We have two dancers - Jahan (Janjani), who wants to be rich, and Aakash (Sethi) who is rich and doesn’t really know what he wants. In comes scary looking Mink Singh and offers to pay Jahan to strip for her friends at a party. It’s a goldmine compared to what he earns and he takes it up. As his stripping career climbs uphill, down the drain goes the friendship. And then somewhere along the way, Jahan meets Sharon (Vashisht) who couldn’t possibly be more bored with his show. Alarmed, Jahan asks her why to which she replies, "I like the real thing." So is Jahan just a stripper or is he becoming something else? Who is Sharon? Who cares? The film is so slow that the audience’s snores sound more entertaining than the dialogues. With a good story in hand, what "Oops!" desperately needed was a better writer. Janjani and Sethi’s inexperience aggrandizes the amateurism with which it has been directed. The only bright spot in here is Mita Vashisht who effortlessly brings about a frightening coldness to her character. Not only is "Oops!" boringly written, it is also half-heartedly put together. The camerawork by Thomas Xavier is shockingly below professional standards. The excessive use of zoom lenses and unintentionally tilted shots are embarrassing to watch. The production design exposes the movie’s low budget with the sets for different locations looking all too similar to each other. "Oops!" is a wannabe movie. Like all wannabes it too fails miserably. Tijori would have struck gold had he handled his bold subject with maturity as opposed to desperately trying to be "cool." While he sure has the ability to come up with a fairly original story, Mr. Tijori would do himself a huge favor by hiring a writer other than himself next time. Perhaps another director as well? |
