Udaan
crashes before it can take off!!!
Rekha fans rejoice. Though Udaan is a terrible film, Rekha pulls off an award winning performance. This film is not for those of you who avoid Indian cinema for its lack of intelligence. Heck, this film is not for ANYONE!!! Udaan stars Rekha as the boss of a high tech company who is placed in a mental hospital by her greedy business partners so that they can market medicine laced with drugs. Then, with the help of her fellow asylum inmates, she escapes. I'm sure you all can guess the ending. Need a hint? She pulls a Phoolan Devi. Where do Madhoo and Saif Ali fit into the plot? Good question. They don't. Madhoo plays a con artist who falls in love with Saif Ali, the broke son of a retired factory worker.
So what went wrong with this film? Well, for one, the inane screenplay. The initial story sounds quite entertaining but when viewed, one can't help but wonder "Wow, Rekha really blew it this time!!!". All the sequences in the asylum are so preposterous, I almost went insane watching them. The only redeeming quality of the movie is the acting. All the stars do well. Rekha does a fantastic job. This film really showcases her acting talents. She can do a perfect pagla imitation too. Madhoo is great as the good bad-girl. Saif Ali Khan does a swell job with his role. He's a great actor who just picks the wrong films to do. Hameshaa, Dil Tera Deewana, and Tu Chor Main Sipahi weren't exactly brilliant career choices. Now he can add Udaan to his long list of flops. Music by Anand-Milind is terrible. I won't waste my time and yours commenting on the lousy songs. Direction by Asrani is terrible also. All in all, this film is not worth much attention or mention. This film just reinforced my beliefs on the inanity of most Indian films. There are some great movies (Virasat, DTPH, DDLJ, Gupt, Chupp, Border, Sardari Begum, etc.), but for every good film, there are ten terrible ones. Udaan is a low IQ film meant for low IQ people!!! What a waste of time!!!
