. Part 2

Another year, another parade of great and not-so-great songs. Planet Bollywood presents our staff's year-end collection of Best Songs for 1999. You may agree or you might not. Does not really matter. In our books, these songs rock! And to keep the tension mounting we will release the songs in three groups of ten over the first few weeks of 2000. Think you can guess the Top Ranks?
Presenting songs 20 to 11

Rank Song Movie Singers Music
20 Chunnari Chunnari Biwi No 1 Abhijeet, Anuradha Shriram Anu Malik

Naughty but not too much. Steal her dupatta yep, but no more. The Chunnari Chunnari refrain is techno-desi funk at its best.

19 Mera Mann Mann Udit Narayan, Alka Yagnik Sanjeev-Darshan

So why do their hearts long for one another? Duh, you're in love. So do something about it. And by the way, a pleasant start by Sanjeev-Darshan.

18 Sirf Tum Sirf Tum Anuradha Paudwal, Hariharan Nadeem Shravan

Personally, it aint screechy Anuradha Paudwal that makes this tune great. I think most of us like it for the grandiose (and melodramatic) lyrics and Hariharan's voice.

17 Pyar Ke Liye Dil Kya Kare Alka Yagnik Jatin-Lalit

Alka Yagnik carries the whole song on her tiny shoulders and races past the finish line. You can't get a more perfect rendition anywhere.

16 Ruki Ruki Thi Zindagi Mast Sunidhi Chauhan, Sonu Nigam Sandeep Chowta

Sunidhi Chauhan is quite a find, eh? Of course so is Sandeep Chowta. Most of us have just been ignoring him too long.

15 Main Mast Mast Sunidhi Chauhan Sandeep Chowta

Could you believe a teen could get so much eroticism into her vocals? Is it not against the law? As if we care while listening to this must love song.

14 Jhonka Hawa Ka Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam Hariharan, Kavita Krishnamurthy Ismail Darbar
This song's picturization has some of the most ironic yet effective visuals in cinematic history. Though I find the film overrated, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam's songs, particularly this one, are incomparable.
13 Oopar Khuda Kachche Dhaage Lata Mangeshkar, Sukhwindara Singh Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan

Lata or Sukhwinder Singh? It does not matter who sings it, cause both do equal justice to this tune adapted from one of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan's own.

12 Kahin Aag Lage Taal Asha Bhosle, Aditya Narayan, Richa Sharma A.R. Rahman

Asha, Asha, Asha. How we love your ageless voice. Rahman-saab knows how to put it to great use.

11 Chup Gaya Badli Mein Hum Aapke Dil Mein Rehte Hain Udit Narayan, Alka Yagnik Anu Malik

A song straight from the heavens. Minimal instruments at any one time, soft clapping hands instead of a chorus, plus Alka and Udit teaming to perfection. (Of course it must be said that the film still sucked.)
