The musical score of long in the making Albela, has finally released. The album provides one or two catchy songs, but this one is a real disappointment. Jatin Lalit have come up with some pretty lame tunes for the listeners, only after 3 or 4 listens do the numbers actually appeal to you, and even then you are still not fully content with the music. The audio features some of Bollywood´s top vocalists but none of them are really challenged in any way, and to top it off lyrics are bland.

Pyaar Ka Jadoo is the opening track and features Alka Yagnik and Udit Narayan. Instantly I could tell that this would be one of the better numbers on the album and trust me, that isn´t saying much. Although the song is kind of catchy it is still no great shakes. Signing by the lead pair is okay, nothing compelling, it´s as if they put in just enough effort to make it seem as if they weren´t bored. Music itself is pretty mediocre, it is the usual J-L stuff, the guitar and the synthesized drums in the back with a little trumpet thrown in and violins for good measure. The outcome is ok.

Sarse Sarak Gayee follows with Alka Yagnik and Babul Supriyo. The song took a few listens to grow on me. Even then it was still boring in parts. Babul Supriyo is a man of great talent and it´s good to see him getting more songs of late, but forgettable songs like this one are not the way to go. Still he does an average job with it. Alka again doesn´t provide her regular oomph to the track and passes through quickly. The fast paced music is okay in parts and boring in parts and the composition is very weak.

Kaho To Zara features Alka Yagnik and Kumar Sanu and is my only true favourite on the album. The song is along the lines of Hothon Pe Baas from Yeh Dillagi (Akshay-Saif- Kajol starrer). The back beat is the same, and the use of instruments is kept in the same style. However the music for this song gets monotonous fast and relies on the singing to keep the song going. As far as singing goes it commands a little more, and Alka and Kumar do an okay job with it. Their high notes are hit with ease but nothing else in the song is rendered challenging.

Dil Hamara Hua Hai is sung with grace by Alka Yagnik and Hariharan. The song has poetic lyrics and nice slow music but fails to captivate anyone. Although the song gets enjoyable after a few listens it will be found boring by many and the fast forward button will definitely be used! Hariharan as always excels in romanitc numbers so nothing much can be said except that he does his job with ease. Alka too provides apt company and follows Hariharan complimenting him in parts. Lyrics are at their best here.

Hato Tum Baju is the obligatory Govinda teaser track and features Sonu Nigam. The music itself is a mix of carribean and jazz, the outcome is basic stuff. It reminds me of beaches and people dancing around as Govinda chases his girlfriend around. Lyrics are dumb, with lines like ´Mera Dil Kare Boom Boom´ making you cringe. Sonu is wasted in the track, but then what can you expect? I mean Govinda songs aren´t really the most vocally challenging numbers.

Next up we have Hai Mera Dil Tu sung by Alka Yagnik and Babul Supriyo. The song is flat out typical J-L stuff and doesn´t hold your attention for long. The composition has some very weak points and the music is a little on the subdued side which is bad for a fast paced song. The singing is mediocre and nothing instantly noticeable. Overall this one takes a long time to get used to if you are willing to sit through the torture.

To end off we have Haiya Hoo Kya Masti which brings together Alka Yagnik, Udit Narayan and Kumar Sanu. The song is much like any other songs on this album...boring. Music is arranged in a party style of composition with many different styles or music and tempo´s being integrated weakly. It leaves you yearning for more. Kumar Sanu does an average job, Alka too is much the same, Udit is no better. Lyrics are okay and keep with the mood of the song. Not the best way to end off the album.

Albela is not a very fulfilling soundtrack. The album is boring and compositions are weak. Lyrics are nothing to write home about except for the mildy poetic Dil Hamara Hua Hai. Singing seems to have been done with minimal effort. Alka Yagnik is used in every song which also makes the album more monotonous. Overall Jatin-Lalit have come up with very general and typical songs for this film. I suggest taking a listen to the songs before you buy the cassette.
