"Kyun Mera Dil" relies almost fully on the novelty of Adnan Samiīs voice (and an uncredited background singer) to carry it to the winning post. The music is simple and light, almost undetectible, and Sameerīs lyrics are expectedly devoid of any prose or deep insight into unreciprocated love. Even more, Mr. Samiīs voice is on almost every second album these days, so thereīs no novelty to be had? The track is a nice hill station-ish sound but little is lovable about it. Shreya Ghosal sounds childish and bratty in "Dil To Udne Laga". Itīs once in a blue moon that Sameerīs lyrics are commendable, but here I like them. And the light meandering musical trills are pleasant too. Just why did Reshammiya have to use todayīs playback "it" girl, Ghosal, to sing in a range where she sounds so annoying and juvenile? Itīs the practised and perfected voices of the talented older brigade, Alka Yagnik and Kumar Sanu, that brings some needed pleasantness to Tum. The mellow "Rehna To Hai" is a stringsī dependant mellow and melodious story of ironic love and deception. Plus, Sanu and Yagnik make it sound exotic. A few tracks later, Roopkumar Rathod gives it a ghazal-ish spin with just as good results. Methinks they are aiming for erotic enticement in "Sangdil Sanam". The subtle techno music rocks, but Anuradha Sharmaīs vocal chords are missing the requisite huskiness required to carry the tune to the bedroom; she sounds inviting, but just not aggressive enough. Udit Narayan and an uncredited male voice actually end up becoming her predators. Why two male voices are needed in the tune, I have no idea. Poor Shaan ends up with the faltering West Indian style of "Mera Dil Laile". Its calypso music at its absolute worst, but then again, Iīm not exactly a fan of the best. The trailers and advertisements for "Tum? A Dangerous Obsession" promise a slick and stylized thriller, but thereīs little of that delivered in this slipped on a banana peel soundtrack. Except for the superb "Rehna To Hai", the film will need to rely on its other merits to win the hearts of listeners and viewers. |
