The industry was quite a buzz when the trailers and audio released for Yeh Dil Aashiqana. This would be the first audio out for Nadeem Shravan where they collaborate together and both of the musical composers promised a lot. Being an avid Nadeem Shravan fan the anticipation quickly built up until I picked the album.

Our opener, the title track, has the Nadeem Shravan stamp on it. The element of the saxophone, the backdrop, and a little more. Kumar Sanu and Alka Yagnik do an awesome job blending well with the backdrop which Nadeem Shravan, at points, have added a little bit of ‘techno’ to it (the repetition of “Aashiqana” vouches for that). The intervals are quite pleasing and you´re bound to be singing "Yeh Dil..." once you turn the CD off. With the amount of promotion this song has had it is already a winner, definite chartbuster.

Bring back the super hit duo of Aashiqui and Nadeem Shravan add some life into “Utha Le Jaunga”. The song speaks of the hero and heroine´s strong desire to get up and get married and for the most part this is another romance song courtesy Sameer. The dholak-based backdrop, something N-S are famous for, is implemented here with a few extra things, definitely another positive aspect of the soundtrack with repeat value. The song is quite nice but doesn’t amount to what the duos gave us in Aashiqui, that is, Nadeem-Shravan and Kumar-Anuradha.

Famous for their Kumar Sanu solos, we have another highly entertaining and romantic serenade “Jab Se Main.” The westernized beats a la “Mohabbat Ho Na Jaaye” are at their best again with excellent use of the saxophone and the harmonica. Immense potential especially when combined with Sanu´s strong vocales. Sarika Kapoor sings “Jab Se Dil” the female version, which also contains a lot of melody with several instruments, surprisingly well. Unfortunately for her, she sounds only marginally close to Chitra, Sanjeevini or Pamela Jain, who are the only comparable singers. The romanticism in both of the tracks works for the most part.

So we had enough of Sameer and “I am in Love” in Dhadkan, or at least we thought so. One can’t help but get sick of this lyricist and his English lyrics. Let’s remember we are composing for a Hindi film soundtrack. Sameer continues to include English lyrics in each of his soundtracks and while it may have been passable in Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham it was not needed here. Does he think that penning the line in English will make us forget that he can’t come up with new lyrics? “I am in love” is no different than pyar, prem, ishq etc. Get a grip. If the idiotic repetition of an unaccredited female pretending or trying real hard to sing opera with “I am In Love” (Nadeem Shravan trying an A.R. Rahman a la Lagaan) was not there this slow duet would be another winner, but the high pithced off voice is quite the turn off. Alka does a good job and so does Sanu and this would be a nice "candle light dinner" tune were it not for the "I am In Love" lines and the awful wanna be opera singing. The music saves it somewhat with the apt use of the saxaphone.

Shaan’s first collaboration with N-S is not like any of the hits the singer has given us this past year but is quite decent in the vocals department. “Yeh Dil Aashiqana” sounds like an opening credits track with Shaan simply repeating the title track over and over again. The western feel highly implimented with the guitar and Shaan´s catchy repetition of the title. It gives you a feel of a car driving on an empty road sort of thing. A winner.

Dhak Chik Dana” could have easily been titled something else since it’s the only the chorus repeating dhak chik… Creative! Sanu and Paudwal again can’t live up to the Aashiqui magic, and Paudwal has done much better. Overall this one has typical beats that are still enjoyable for the most part, this song would have worked much better had there been no chorus.

Picture yourself on stage in college pretending you’re in a band (and can actually play instruments) so you’re there and you can start feeling “College ki Ladkiyan”, an enjoyable swift number with Nadeem Shravan’s popular music. Udit Narayan sounds quite good here and is a refreshing change from Sanu who is all over the soundtrack. This is an extremely enjoyable song and reminds you why Nadeem Shravan are so popular. With the visualization you can see this song which has “Arabic” style intervals, climbing the top ten charts quickly. There is still a little of a “Na Na Karte Pyar”/ “Pyaar Huana” hung over here but it doesn’t stand out as much. At least Sameer’s lyrics haven’t ruined the entire soundtrack!

Nadeem Shravan are known to compose qawaali’s for their soundtracks and they don’t do it that bad. “Allah Allah”, sung by the Sabri Brothers (who did a good job in Pardes), Sonu Nigam and Alka Yagnik and Taushif Akhtar, is another high quality qawaali which displays a bit of talent from each of the singers. There is variation from Nadeem Shravan’s usual qawaali music bank and the outcome is pleasant.

The instrumental track, much like all other Nadeem Shravan instrumentals, is just another instrumental. Nice elavator music as once one said.

If you are an extremely intense Nadeem Shravan like I am you will be a little disappointed with this one. I know I was. So what if Nadeem Shravan have given great soundtracks with Sameer, that doesn’t mean they must always work with him, for it is quite clear that he has detracted from the quality of this soundtrack. For this newcomer- fresh face flick I’m sure this music is enough to pass it off, especially with the title track and Udit Narayan’s solo. For the duo who had four soundtracks out this year, Kasoor still remains their best effort and one can only wait for their upcoming release Raaz to hopefully repeat the Kasoor magic under the Bhatt banner.
