Comparing the number of ´hero´, ´spy´, or man vs. terrorist films can be quite cumbersome this day in Bollywood. Add to that the many that have featured Sunny Deol, the hero of "The Hero- Love Story of A Spy", and you´d have an endless task on your hands. Presumably, director Anil Sharma, whose last film Gadar: Ek Prem Katha was the last to make the industry really smile completely, was aware of this when he launched his follow up project. So, he has done just that and some more. The Hero is your regular action fare as far as basis for script is concerned (that and a love triangle), but its presentation is ten times more any recent Bollywood film could have proven. Considering the technical suave audience appeal which has increased over the years, the gargantuan financed big budgeted love story of a spy is bound to be a trendsetter, evidently not for its story, but the many other important attributes of good film making.
Arjun Khanna (Sunny Deol) is the spy, upbeat Kashmiri Reshma (Preity Zinta) and doctor Shayna (Priyanka Chopra) are the characters in his love story. How does his newly found romantic life interfere with his goals to overcome the evident problem of terrorism being led by master villain Ishaa Khan (Amrish Puri)? Arjun not only uses his beau´s to his advantage (ala Bond girls) but uses their emotions as well, however, in the end someone must lose. Whether it be in the game of love or in the game of war.
Amongst the many highlights of a large budget which has been put to use in action, sets, and locations, The Hero was shot almost exclusively in Canada and features Canadian based models in roles which actually have more than your average day dialogues written for them. The actions scenes alone (of which Hollywood and Bollywood directors have been used) comprise of most of the film´s budget and Sunny Deol, loving them, obviously went through a great deal of effort to shoot the scenes to perfection.
The Hero introduces Priyanka Chopra (her other debut Andaaz has been subsequently postponed for The Hero to release), and is the second film Preity Zinta and Sunny Deol are featuring in after the dismal Farz, by Raj Kanwar. While Priyanka has been said to have the lesser role (obviously), Anil Sharma is known for giving his heroines due presentation. After the dazzle that was Gadar: Ek Prem Katha, audiences have all of that to look forward to and more. |
