All izzz well indeed for Rajkumar Hirani who successfully breaks away from the Munnabhai series with “3 Idiots” which is another feather in the cap for the most talented actor of our generation….Aamir Khan. As for "De Dana Dan", the less said about that film the better, as it`s a complete waste of time!

What’s that you say? Aamir Khan can’t top himself anymore? He won’t be able to deliver another hit or new performance? I think not!

What’s that you say? Rajkumar Hirani can’t break out of the Munnabhai series to deliver something new? I think not!

It is in this atmosphere of pessimism that a little movie like “3 Idiots” (produced by the always black t-shirt clad Vidhu Vinod Chopra) has come along to deliver a film that you can laugh along with, and not simply at. It’s a comedy and drama that has been fused together to provide a dramedy that will make you laugh one moment, while you wipe away the tears with the next. A big piece of cinema with just the right amounts of fiction melded with beyond belief ideology (vacuum cleaner births being a prime example of cinematic license). A word to the wise, this is not a film that the viewer needs to over analyze or critique. It’s a movie that is meant to make you remember what it’s like to live for your dreams as experienced by your rogue avatar Aamir Khan.

The story is fairly straightforward. Three men go to one of India’s elite engineering schools all under different pretences. One idiot (Madhavan aka Maddie) is forced to go by his father, who coerced him to be an engineer since the day he was born, though he wants nothing more than to be a wildlife photographer. The second idiot (Sharman Joshi) has a paralyzed father and crying mother (plus unwed sister naturally) at home that are relying on him to bring in the extra paisa paisa, by becoming an engineer. The third idiot (Aamir Khan) is an avante garde genius who bucks the system and pushes beyond the boundaries of acceptable behavior to move dreams closer to reality.

Along the way they bump heads with the principal Viru Sahastrabudhhe (Boman Irani), his daughter Pia (Kareena Kapoor) and the Ugandan student from hell, Chatur Ramalingam (Omi Vaidya in a scene stealing supporting role). All through the film, the 3 idiots in question follow the basic principle that no matter how bad things get, “All Izzzzzzz Well”!

Rajkumar Hirani and Abhijit Joshi have the unenviable task of adapting Chetan Bhagat’s best selling novel, “Five Point Someone” for the big screen. It’s unenviable, because translating the written medium into the film medium is not always easy, resulting in films that are poor versions of the original novel (ala “One Night @ the Call Centre” which resulted in the disastrous film, “Hello”). Hirani and Joshi do the novel justice and have written a screenplay that in the words of Chetan Bhagat, “retains the soul of the book”. Having read the novel, I have to say there are significant differences in characterizations, and narrative flow; however, one must realize that you can never directly adapt a novel without changes and transform it into a film. Certain changes have to be made, and luckily the screenplay writers of “3 Idiots” have made the necessary changes to ease the transition from one medium to another.

Hirani wears another bigger cap, and that is as director of the movie. He uses innovative points of view, angles, and use of breathtaking locales with some digital effects used subtly to immerse the audience in the world of these idiots (four if you count Omi Vaidya’s character). Along the way, we are treated to the hard facts of life on how parents push their children away from their dreams, how the current educational system stresses learning about what has already been done rather than being innovatively looking towards the future, and how material happiness is not everything.

We move from the future and the disappearance of Rancho (Aamir Khan), to the past and how the characters meet, and ultimately part. Like the winding roads that Farhan (Madhavan), Hari (Sharman), Pia (Kareena) and Chatur (Omi, the over achieving silencer whose bodily excretions can bring tears to anyone’s eyes) drive on, the story twists ‘n’ turns to keep the viewer off balance enough to be interested, yet comfortable enough to be entertained.

The music by Shantanu Moitra, is perfectly utilized by Hirani (though it doesn’t stand up well without seeing the film first). It’s interesting to note, that in the current world of made for promos music, Moitra has actually composed music that supports and moves the narrative forward. He is a true composer, and unfortunately a dying breed in the current world of Bolly music where the culture is to churn out a few promo songs that do nothing for the movie in question. Watch out for the 60’s inspired “Zoobie Doobie”, it will have you moving along in the popular puppet without a string dances of that time.

Cinematography by C.K. Muraleedharan (“Lage Raho Munnabhai”) is excellent as he uses just the right filters to bring out the emotions in various scenes.

The excellence of the film ultimately boils down to is the fact that Aamir Khan makes one believe that he is Rancho, the eccentric super genius who can literally change the world (and people) around him with his approach to life. He simply shines and proves that he is the best actor of this generation (Ranbir better take some notes). He becomes Rancho and you smile when he smiles, and cry when he cries. It’s as simple and complicated as that. Sharman and Madhavan each get their moment to shine. Especially hilarious is the commentary with black and white imagery that is associated with Sharman’s family, the quintessential suffering Indian family from 50s films. Kareena Kapoor delivers an excellent performance as Pia the doctor who is the kind of glamorous nerd all guys would like to meet. Boman Irani is especially funny in a nasty sort of way as the VIRUS. Omi Vaidya (seen on the American T.V. show, “The Office”) steals each scene as the Indian from Uganda whose Hindi is not up to par, resulting in a drop to your knees with laughter scene during his character’s speech to the student body.

Finally, the narrative is a bit uneven at times, and certain scenes (like delivering a baby with a vacuum cleaner) stretch realism, but let’s face it, this isn’t a hard-hitting reality based film. It’s a feel good entertainer that is allowed to be just that. Too many times people start overly philosophizing and try to find hidden meanings of life within apna Bollywood films. Why not just enjoy the amazing performances, sweet music, and witty dialogues. So, dil pe mat le yaar, and enjoy a fun film full of harmless idiots that will have you laughing and crying all the way to your heart. In the end, just put your hand on your heart and repeat after me: All izzz well! All izzz well! All izz well!


 Tum Mile

Mukesh and Mahesh Bhatt return with a fresh tale inspired by the real life events of the Mumbai rain floods that occurred in July of 2005 (killing many people). “Tum Mile” features the usual combo of slick urban visuals, melodious music, and down to Earth acting that have become the trademark of Vishesh films productions.

Director of last year’s hit film “Jannat”, Kunal Deshmukh is at the helm of this ship that deals with the interesting parallel stories of a relationship gone bad and the disasterous affects of nature gone wild on Mumbai. Mahesh Bhatt’s nephew Emraan Hashmi and Saif Ali Khan’s sister Soha, portray a couple that had broken up but are thrown together again by fate during the floods. Cue the naval gazing music, as this leads to all kinds of flashbacks and reminiscing about what went wrong to pull these two apart in the first place.

Along the way we are treated so some nice musical interludes by Pritam, some very well acted character-centric scenes between Emraan and Soha (who share a nice chemistry vibe between them), all the while having the foreboding imminent danger hanging over their (and the audience’s) heads.

Deshmukh balances the disaster of the relationship against the backdrop of the natural disaster very well, and this could easily have been a mess in the hands of another less capable director. Credit should be given to the fairly well written screenplay by Ankur Tewari (writer of the easily forgotten, “Let’s Enjoy”), who has spaced out the character moments with the correct amount of drama in-between. The cinematography by Prakash Kutti (“99”) is stark and dark when it needs to be. Editing by Ajay Sharma keeps the film focused on it’s plot. I have to mention the visual effects, which were probably done on a shoe string budget. Though they do not convey the massive impact of the floods on the citizens of Mumbai, Ritesh Aggrawal and his crew have done their best with what they have. Particularly good is the work of the rendering artist, Ashutosh Khandelwal, again given the budget of the film.

Emraan Hashmi is excellent, and it’s a shame that he is not being signed by any other film makers. He is the soul of Vishesh Films rights now, and has grown tremendously as an actor. He’s no chocolate boy, but that’s okay. He is a highlight of the film and has graduated from a mere serial kisser to a mature serial actor. Soha plays her part just right, fitting in as the girl next door (the one that got away). She and Emraan are given realistic love/hate stories to portray and she does extremely well. She’s grown leaps and bounds since her excellent acting in “Khoya Khoya Chand”. Unfortunately other mainstream producers are slow to sign her as she isn’t the typical glamour girl found in most Bollywood films.

“Tum Mile” is an enjoyable way to spend a couple of hours. It’s not Earth shattering, and you won’t feel the heavens being moved or your life changed in any way. You won’t get any kind of divine revelation after watching the film, but you’ll find that the film is most definitely paisa vasool.

Yesterday we spoke about Madhur Bhandarkar’s “Jail” which really takes Bollywood to another cinematic level, and today we talk about Rajkumar Santoshi’s latest film (his first out and out comedy since the classic “Andaz Apna Apna”) "Ajan Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani". Just when you think the rotund director has fallen by the pop cultural wayside, he comes back with a youthful comedy that basically laughs in the face of all the naysayers who had written him off.

The most difficult part was finding the right cast, and Mr. Santoshi did it right by casting Ranbir Kapoor (currently on top of the Bollywood hero heap) and Katrina Kaif (currently on top of the Bollywood heroine heap) as the lead pair. This automatically ties in to the college going zeitgeist and ensures a built in audience. The second intelligent thing that the director has done is rope in the king of youthful music,Pritam to deliver a rrrrrrrrrrocking soundtrack that is youthful, soulful and playful in all the right places.

With those choices set in stone, the rest of the pieces can either measure up or be less than the sum of their parts. More on that a little later, but for now let’s jump into the madcap story by writers Rajeshwar (story), Rajkumar Santoshi (story and screenplay), R.D. Tailang (dialogue). The basic premise is that Ranbir plays Prem. A side note here, but don’t you think that Prem is the most over used name in Bollywood cinema? Perhaps it’s time to retire the name and place it in the Bollywood Hall of Fame. But I digress. As, I mentioned, Ranbir plays Prem and Katrina portrays Jenny. Prem loves Jenny. Jenny loves (though I can’t fathom why) the character played by Upen Patel (he of the magically enhanced cleft chin). Upen is the son of a corrupt politician, Prem is the crazy slacker with a heart of gold (and a wonderful father portrayed by the excellent Darshan Jariwala), and Jenny is the cho chweet girl adopted by crazy parents who don’t care for her.

So, does Ranbir try to steal her away? Na, our pure hero realizes that the girl he loves, loves someone else and does his best to make sure the two are together. Unfortunately, no Bollywood film (or for that matter a Rajkumar Santoshi film) is complete without a corrupt politician. In this case, Upen’s dad Govind Namdeo. So that’s the story in a nutshell. Of course there’s another villain who should have been edited out (though actor Zakir Hussain tries his best to be eeeeeeevil).

So how’s the film? Well, you know the feeling where you want to laugh so badly, that you laugh and stop and laugh and stop and then laugh some more? That pretty much describes the film. It’s light and breezy, the mood is just right and the first half is pretty funny, if not outright hilarious. Unfortunately it suffers from the same choppy quality that “Andaz Apna Apna” suffered from, in that the film simply goes on a bit too long resulting in a trite climax that one can see is clumsily put together in order to tie up all the loose ends.

Still, nothing I say will keep fans of this genre away, or the college kids to whom this film is clearly aimed at (ka-pow). Ranbir Kapoor is the shining knight of Bollywood who can do no wrong, and he deserves the recognition he gets. In the hands of another less talented actor, the film would have gone horribly wrong, but he knows just how to emote and convey comedy whether it is through expressions or the physical use of his body. Katrina Kaif, does her best to fight back that wooden quality in her dialogue delivery and acting, resulting in a fairly decent performance. She’s no super powered actor, but she’s good enough for the role. The two share a great chemistry, and it’s because of that, and some really funny moments that the film succeeds(plus Pritam’s foot tapping music).

Santoshi’s direction is as usual up to the high standards he has set with his previous films but one wishes the editing were a bit tighter. Ah well, you can’t have it all. If you are thinking about asking that cute girl or guy you know out on a date, then this is the perfect movie. You can watch the parts that are funny, and perhaps entertain yourselves in other ways during the parts that are not (don’t tell mummy and papa that I said that though). Check it out, take it for what it is, and admire Ranbir Kapoor, for he is definitely headed towards super stardom.


 Jail

Unless you have ever been unlucky enough to be in an Indian prison, you’ve never felt the absolute grim stark madness of prisons. Bollywood films tend to stay away from showing the darker sides of prison life. It’s a world that is ripe with the possibilities of stories not only ripped from the headlines, but of drama on a universal scale of perverse humanity. If Western jails are known for the sheer brutality of its inmates, then what are Indian jails known for? Not the revolving door jails that stars come in and out of, and not the jails with the invariably buffoonish cops ‘n’ robbers shown in most Bollywood films, but rather the true reality of the Indian prison system?

Trust Madhur Bhandarkar, who has moved from the gossip of “Page 3” to the dirty doings of the “Corporate” world to the gangs of “Traffic Signal” to the sexy undoings of the “Fashion” world, to shine his directorial vision on what has heretofore been an undiscovered world.

He brings his trademark hard hitting style to a story which on the service sounds like a cliché. Seemingly innocent Parag Dixit finds himself in jail, but why? He’s got a great life and a great girlfriend (Mugdha Godse), but winds up in Jail where he is befriended by the yoda of the Indian prison system, Nawab (the always great Manjoj Bajpayee).

Yet, from the first frame till the last, the viewer will find him/herself captivated by what is shown on screen. It’s not just the direction which is sharp and to the point. The acting by Neil Nitin Mukesh is absolutely riveting. You can see each tortured expression on his face (and through the movement of his body). He simply carries the film on his shoulders and makes this a must see experience.

One thing I must commend the director (and writers) is on the attention to detail within this movie(which there is a noticeable lack of in Bollywood films). From the booking in and registration of new inmates, to the explicit details of prison life, extra care is taken to depict everything in a realistic manner. That is primarily thanks to the excellent research conducted by the screenplay writers Anuradha Tiwari and Manoj Tyagi.

The creepy and humanistic cast includes Arya Babbar (excellent), G.K. Desai, Navni Parihar, Raahul Singh, Chetan Pandit, and Jignesh Joshi. The cinematography by Kalpesh Bhandarkar sets the right atmosphere showcasing the contrasts between the prison and the “real” world. Devendra Murdeshwar’s editing is perfect, letting no scene linger for too long, creating the right kind of momentum that propels the film and viewer to the inevitable climax. The music by Shamir Tandon is not as memorable as the music for Bhandarkar’s "Fashion", but one must understand that this is an entirely different film wherein music doesn’t have much of a place.

Yes, there’s that other feel good movie starring Ranbir Kapoor that is out there right now, and most people are going to see that, but do yourself a favor and check out Madhur Bhandarkar’s “Jail”. It’s a movie with a dark side, and one that will resonate even after the last reel. Can you say that about that other feel good movie? I bet not.


 Wanted

Arre Yaar! Apun ka bhai, Salman is back! He’s lean, mean, dangerous, and not what he seems in this ekdum paisa vasool film. When hearing about the film, it could have gone either way, as it’s choreographer Prabhudeva’s first directorial feature, and Salman hasn’t exactly been firing on all guns (his arms or the revolver kind) in his recent films. On top of that add the already fading from public consciousness Ayesha Takia, the girl next door who never quite broke out into the superstar next door (for some reason), though she has potential. Mixing three unknowns together to film a movie that marks the return of Salman to the action genre (I keep telling you Salman bhai, do more action films, you excel as the angry young (or slightly older) man). What’s more, the film was announced as having music from the ever reliable, though slightly generic team of Sajid Wajid. So what happened to transform a film that by all rights should have been a Turkey? Well, first off, the music released and it was fantastically entertaining. Sajid Wajid, did what they do best, and that is create simple foot tapping numbers that drive the listener to hum along, whether you like it or not! Though, to see them in a different (and more creative) avatar, you’d be better off listening to their recent release “Main Aur Mrs. Khanna”. Then the promos started hitting the air waves, and bada bing, bada boom, the anticipation grew. Yes, Salman looks younger than ever and like he’s actually putting an effort. Yes, he and Ayesha have chemistry, yes the film looks slick and yes, Sallu fans have to see this film.

So was it good for you? Let’s go over the good, the bad, and the ugly of the film shall we? Well, first off, it’s a remake of a Telugu/Tamil film named “Pokiri”, so let’s not talk about originality at all. This is simply a rock on, hard-hitting masala flick wherein our lead hero pretty much oozes testosterone on the silver screen. Salman plays gangster Radhe who is doing his best to eliminate the don king Gani Bhai’s (Prakash Raj) foes one by one (or in this case dozens by dozens). Radhe is crazy with a capital C, but loves with a capital L. You see the fair maiden Jahnvi (Ayesha Takia who does fairly well) has captured not only his heart but that of the inspector with no heart, Talpade (played by the eternally sleazy Mahesh Manjrekar). Then there’s Angelina Jolie with her double guns, er, sorry that’s Hollywood’s version of “Wanted”.

Prabhudeva brings with him his out of this world cutting edge Southern sensibilities, and relishes in the Indianness that is inherent with this kind of screenplay by Shiraz Ahmed. Producer Boney Kapoor was wise to give Prabhu free rein, as the result is a movie that is a roller coaster. Just don’t give too much thought to the plotline. During a behind the scenes snippet, Prabhu spoke about how he carefully choreographed (with the assistance of Vijayan the stunt coordinator) the fight scenes, and it shows. There’s a kinetic energy in them that seems to be giving Salman a high.

So, lets talk about Salman’s acting a bit shall we? I have to say that this is probably Salman’s best performance in a long time. Whereas in more recent flicks he seemed to be sleep walking through his performances, one gets the feeling that he put in a lot of effort with this film. He carries it well, and proves that he fulfills an aspect of super stardom that Aamir and Shah Rukh don’t.

This is a perfect holiday movie to enjoy during the festive season. It will make you cheer apna Sallu on to glory, and will leave you with a warm fuzzy feeling of gritty violence plus love in your heart!

I think I had more fun during my root canal than watching this painful moviegoing experience in torturous tedium by a director who has long run out of interesting ideas (Priyadarshan). This one should have been great. It had the director of what is probably the most beloved comedy film in the last decade, “Hera Pheri”. It reunited the three main leads (Akshay Kumar, Suneil Shetty, and Paresh Rawal) from that film. It should have been everything that “Hera Pheri” was and “Hera Pheri 2” wasn’t. Yet, the film fails on every level.

Hear that buzzing? That’s the dentist drilling through my tooth. OUCH!!!! Do you think that’s fun? Then you’ll love this film whose story is not even worth mentioning. Akshay looks lost and tries his best to elevate a film that must have known wasn’t working out. One can only imagine that he took a lot of money to sign for the film, for it certainly (hopefully) wasn’t based on the poor screenplay. Katrina Kaif does not act, and her dialogue delivery is atrocious. Paresh Rawal has been neglected by Bollywood this year, and unfortunately ends the year on this stale note. Suneil Shetty, is forgettable. Archana Puran Singh will make you want to scream in agony. All in all, getting a root canal is more fun, so do yourself a favor and save yourself some paisa, go watch “3 Idiots” instead.

Sikandar is one of those films wherein the viewer wishes that it were better and keeps on trying to jump-start the film as each reel goes by. Unfortunately no amount of optimism can save this movie. Other than very enjoyable music by Shankar, Ehsaan, and Loy (with the mesmerizing “Dhoop Ke Sikke”), the film has little to offer, though the concept is very intriguing.The plot (set in Kashmir) focuses on a young Muslim boy named Sikandar, whose parents are murdered by terrorists. The boy is somewhat of an introvert and is bullied by other kids at school. One day he finds a gun, and from then on waves it at whomsoever he feels threatened by. Of course, this makes him a prime candidate for the local chapter of fantatics ‘r’ us and soon he is being mentored by a terrorist leader. Once he is ready he is given a mission to assassinate a local leader who preaches non-violence. Along the way, Sikandar’s friend Nasreen (Ayesha Kapoor) tries to stop him from falling down into a well that he will not be able to crawl out of. The film sounds really interesting doesn’t it? On top of all this, Piyush Jha has handled the direction really well. Plus the child actors are stellar. Then why is it in the Thums Down section? Let’s take a look.

Without spoiling the plotline for those that actually want to see the film (whatever the reviews say). The story takes a turn for the worse during the second half with revelations about characters that do not make any sense, and an ending ripped off from a Hollywood film. The message is pure, but the dreaded weak screenplay syndrome that afflicts many a Bollywood release muddles it. It’s a shame, because what could have become an important film that would shine the spotlight on Kashmir, instead becomes a quickly forgotten movie that resonates with the failed hopes of what could have been.

Unfortunately, “Aagey Se Right” is just so wrong. What should have and could have been a really interesting movie focusing on two quirky characters (and a gun) turns into a mish mash of different underwritten characters that fail to capture the attention of the audience. I feel bad for Shreyas Talpade, who is the only saving grace in the film. We all know that he’s an excellent actor, but he can not save this film by himself. If he doesn’t stop this downward spiral in his career, he won’t be around much longer. The director Indrajit Nattoji shows promise, but where this film fails is at the screenplay level. The story just does not work. Even the usually dependable Kay Kay Menon fails to deliver a noteworthy performance. As for the rest of the cast, Mahi Gill does well, as does Bharti Achrekar, but that’s simply not enough. If you think about seeing “Aagey Se Right”, then perhaps you’d be better off turning left and up towards one of the films in the Thums Up section!

Are you crazy like a fox? Feeling foxy tonight? Want to dance the fox trot? What does this have to do with the movie, “Fox” directed by Deepak Tijori (the actor turned director)? Absolutely nothing, except they might all be more entertaining than the film, “Fox” which tries too hard to be a thriller, but lacks the snap crackle pop needed and instead turns into a mediocre mish mash of infinite proportions. Unfortunately for Arjun Rampal, the film will do absolutely nothing for his career, and breaks his recent winning streak at the box office. His acting is wooden, and he seems to have drifted through the film. That’s probably the fault of the director and the fact that the screenplay is poorly written. You see, Rampal plays a ruthless lawyer who wins every case until he develops a heart and changes his mind. He wants out, but the classic Hindi villain of the film (cue evil laughter in Hindi), has something else in mind. Now Rampal’s character is on the run and can only be helped by super cop Sunny Deol (pulled out of semi-retirement for this poor film). Udita Goswami returns to the screen because nobody demanded it. She does her usual distressed sex appeal show. The music by Monty Sharma, is so forgettable that I can’t find the words for it. Just goes to show that Sanjay Leela Bhansali is perhaps the only one capable of bringing out the talent in Monty, who just can’t live up to expectations with other directors. All in all, this fox goes nowhere fast. Perhaps Deepak Tijori could revive his acting career? Direction just doesn’t seem to be his forte.

Manoj Kumar’s film “Upkaar” is given a dust off for a remake that doesn’t go anywhere near the quality of the original. Arbaaz Khan and Sohail Khan play two brothers from a small village in Punjab. One goes of to the big city, one stays back, until the evil filthy rich businessman (who is the villain of the piece) comes back to literally steal the family farm away. Finally the brothers are united against the mob of terrifying miscreants that will settle for nothing less than their blood. Normally, I love throwbacks to older movies as it appeals to the Bollywood cheesy heart that beats within my soul, yet even I couldn’t bring myself to find anything good about this film. Arbaaz and Sohail are okay as are the other actors (which include such B movie staples as Dia Mirza and Jackie Schroff), it’s just the story which drops to nonsensical levels (particularly during the second half), that totally fails to deliver. Balle balle, miss this one and dance your way to the Thums Up section for some real entertainment!
