Finally Aamir Khan makes his debut on television with a socially relevant show like Satyamev Jayate. We already have several shows relating to social relevance but with Aamir Khan hosting such a show, will it have wider reach in the country and abroad?

Aamir Khan is one of the most influential figures from the film industry. He is a superstar and a great actor. With Shahrukh Khan and Salman Khan, he has been ruling the Hindi film industry since the last two decades. His movies have always been entertaining. But in the last decade he has been part of a type of cinema which has been different with social relevance but still entertaining. Lagaan, Rang De Basanti, Taare Zameen Par and 3 Idiots are examples of such path-breaking cinema. I always feel, watching or reading Aamir Khan’s interviews, they always enriches you. He may not be highly educated but Aamir Khan has been one of the most well-read and knowledgeable personalities in Indian film industry.

In India the Television Medium has grown tremendously in the last ten years. These days, the reach of television has been higher than our films. Many actors from the big screen have donned the roles of television host or anchor and have been doing game / reality shows to manifold their popularity and also earning big money. Bollywood superstars like Amitabh Bachchan, Shahrukh Khan, Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar and Hrithik Roshan have all been part of television shows. Amitabh and Salman have been very successful and had high TRP rating for their shows like Kaun Banega Crorepathi, Dus Ka Dum and Bigg Boss. Aamir Khan’s television debut was long overdue. We all know when he takes up a project under the Aamir Khan Productions banner, one can expect ‘perfection’ since this attitude has earned him great success over his career.

In every episode of Satyamev Jayate, Aamir Khan will discuss social related issues affecting common people in India. There will also be eminent personalities giving their views on the issues. This show can really bring a change in our mind-set and make a difference. Topics will be related to dowry, girl birth, rape, corruption and crime. Aamir Khan has once again taken a unique step in television similar to what he has done with his choice of films. He has not been the kind of actor doing four or five films a year. He does one film a year, which is path-breaking (and also earns great moolah). He has broken all rules of Indian Cinema and he plans to do the same with his television show.

Aamir Khan has taken a slot of 11 A.M (India Time) on Sunday morning for his television show. It reminds me of days of my childhood with Doordarshan showing Ramayana and Mahabharata on television. The best thing about his show is that it is also being shown on Doordarshan. This will have wider reach to each and every part of the country.

The truth is we need more socially relevant shows like Satyamev Jayate with our big stars to get wider reach to showcase the problems facing India. Superstars like Salman Khan, who is running a NGO like Being Human should take note instead of doing shows like BIgg Boss. Stars like Shahrukh, Akshay, Hrithik, Ranbir and Ajay Devgan should also consider being part of socially relevant shows as they can bring an inspiring change within the youth of today's India.

Aamir Khan’s Satyamev Jayate can do what Anna Hazare did last year against corruption. It can attract a lot of youngsters to fight towards social problems of India. Satyamev Jayate has the potential to be an inspiring show. It should make the people of India conscious of their responsibilities towards the social issues affecting their country. That can only be a good thing.
