´´From Director To Teacher´´ - Karan Johar
- Supriya Davda           Let us know what you think about this article

Planet Bollywood Reporter Supriya Davda speaks to film maker Karan Johar and newbies Varun Dhawan, Alia Bhatt and Sidharth Malhotra.

Student of the Year is a college romance starring three fresh faces Varun Dhawan, Alia Bhatt and Sidharth Malhotra.

Karan its been about 14 years since Kuch Kuch Hota Hai has released since the onset you have always worked with established actors, but now for the first time you’re working with fresh faces did you ever miss working with Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol and Rani Mukherjee?

Oh many times. But it had nothing to do with them [Alia, Varun and Sidharth.] It was not because they were failing, it was me missing the movie star magic on set and inevitably my friends. We have a great personal and professional relationship. They were many days when I felt, “Should I have made this film? Am I doing a good job with these kids?” But the larger moments were where I felt happy, young and alive as a filmmaker. I don’t want to do injustice to these kids; this [film] made me from director to teacher.

Alia, Varun and Sidharth what are the pressures in being Karan Johar’s protege’s?

Sidharth: The standards are extremely high after all we are working with The Karan Johar. I think it helped working with him on My Name is Khan as we knew his temperaments. Dharma Productions and Karan Johar are very particular film makers so from the way you look to what you say, how you deliver your dialogue. We’ve gone all out I think.

Alia: Sid has perhaps spoken for us three, but the fact that it’s a Karan Johar film, the standards are already set. Everything is larger than life. Be it the film sets, to costumes to the music and trust me even the promotional activities. Its been a lot of fun but equally a lot of hard work.

Varun: To be honest when Karan had initially spoken to Sid and I about the film, it was such an unreal moment. I think we kept messaging him; is this true? Is this actually happening? Till now it feels so surreal.

What would the three of you say was the most difficult part of film-making?

Alia: The entire experience has been amazing, film-making is a difficult process and I don't think people realise how much work goes into producing a three hour reel.

Sidharth: You know dancing was so tough, matching the steps and co-ordinating was the most difficult.

Varun: Like Alia said that the film-making process, from day one of shoot to promotions is hard. But have loved every minute of it.

Varun and Alia you both come from film families and both your respective fathers have had extremely successful careers; what do you both think of your father’s careers?

Alia: I loved his films are “Aarth”, “Saransh” and “Zakhm”. I don’t see him directing again. But am an extremely proud daughter.

Varun: I’m extremely proud of my father's achievements and am sure he will make films till his last breathe.

Karan it was this weekend that the Jhalak Dhiklaja was shown on Colors TV and may I add that you did a fantastic reproduction of the song ‘’Radha’’ I think you should’ve have used your version for promotional activities?

[Laughs] Are you serious you liked it? I think the three kids have done perfectly, I don’t think people would want to see me.

Karan how are you balancing producing films, directing, anchoring and judging reality shows?

Supriya I find it extremely disturbing when people are just idol. There is so much to do in this world, and to be honest I love working. I’m not someone who you will find lazing. Six hours of sleep is suffice and it's back to work. That’s the way it should be.

Student of The Year Releases Worldwide on Friday 19th October 2012.
