Deewaar is probably one of the most memorable films of all time from Yash Chopra. The film has a lot of impressive and memorable dialogues. The screenplay, direction, and performances are all par excellence. The music of the film was not very popular, but the song "Tune mujhe maanga mujhe paaya hai…." is hummable. Now let me tell you what the film is actually about.
Vijay (Amitabh Bachchan) and Ravi (Shashi Kapoor) are two brothers who were raised in poor conditions by their strong hearted mother (Nirupa Roy). Vijay is not as highly educated as Ravi, and therefor he works in a shipping dock. Vijay is very different from his brother as he has a "tez mizaaj" while his brother Ravi is polite. Ravi can’t find a job even though he is very smart and has degrees. One day Ravi meets his girlfriend´s (Neetu Singh) dad who is a police commissioner. Ravi then decides to go for training to become a cop since he can’t find a job. On the other hand, Vijay is approached by underworld don Daavar, and is driven into the world of crime. Vijay´s only reason to go into the underworld is because he has seen his mother suffer so much in life and wants to provide her all the luxuries of life. Then Ravi returns as a cop, Vijay tries to hide that he is a don but is unsuccessful. The rest of the film is how the two brothers are separated by their duties as one is trying to protect the law and the other is breaking it.
The film is full of awesome performances. Amitabh again delivers, remember folks this was the time of his prime in the industry. Shashi Kapoor also gives a memorable performance. The "real" underdog is however Nirupa Roy, she plays her part with perfection. The type of role she played doesn´t come quite often, and she played it wonderfully. The heroines of the film are Neetu Singh (opposite Shashi Kapoor) and Parveen Babi (opposite Amitabh Bachchan). Though they have very short roles, they are still better than the "two songs, four scenes" heroines of today, like Sonali Bendre and a few others.
All in all, Deewaar is a must see film for any Yash Chopra or Amitabh fan.
