Ramgopal Verma´s Chandan Arora directed,

Main Madhuri Dixit Banna Chahti Hoon, catches your attention due to its unusual title. Since it comes from the RGV stable it attracts all those who are bored with the run the mill stuff being churned out by bollywood .

The movie opens in the small town of ´Gajraula´ which can be from any part of India, however the lead actors accent hints at Uttar Pradesh. The opening scene has a ´nautanki´ or as is known in these parts ´dance party´ set up and the local belle ´Chutki´ (Antara Mali) performs on stage to a few Madhuri Dixit numbers.

Chutki is cheered on and after a few more perforances, where she gyrates and synch´s to Madhuri numbers, she gets convinced that she can emulate her idol Madhuri, if she can reach Mumbai and act in movies. While her father is quite lenient in letting her have her ways, once he learns about her aspirations to go to Mumbai and become an actress, he decides to get her married. Chutki as usual asks her best friend Raja (Rajpal Yadav) to sort out the problem. Raja who is the son of the pradhan comes up with an idea whereby he marries Chutki and then officially takes her to Mumbai on the pretext of setting up a business.

They land up in Mumbai, but struggle to find her a role. They even meet a Ramgopal Verma, inspired character (played by Benjamin Gilani), who always gives breaks to newcomers, but unfortunately he offers a role to Raja instead of Chutki.

Raja and Chutki ultimately get lucky when they meet Govind Namdeo who agrees to become Chutki´s secretary. He sets down a few conditions before getting Chutki a role in a music video. After seeing her dance performance in the video she is offered a few roles. Her secretary finally gets her the main female lead in a film starring Dev Anand, Shah Rukh Khan, Sunny Deol and many more leading stars .

Chutki is delighted but on reaching the sets she is horrified as all of them turn out to be look alikes. She threatens to walk out but ultimatelyconcedes after being convinced by Govind.

The movie ´Roshni´ gets completed and both Raja and Chutki rush to see the first day first show but to their utter dismay, they find the theaters half empty. They have to listen to adverse audience reactions. Chutki is crestfallen and returns to her native, Gajaraula but her secretary reaches there and convinces her to come back saying that though the movie has not been successful in the cities it has rocked the interiors or small towns .

Coming after Darna Mana Hai, MMDBCH is downright childish. Chutki performs to raunchy numbers on stage yet everyone respects. Some of the incidences in Mumbai are very unrealistic including the ease with which the filmmakers are accessible. The reference to the kind of movies that run in the smaller centres or towns is in bad taste and shows the ignorance of the director to the fact that even there the audience have grown up .

Director Chandan Arora is not clear about whether he wants to show a fairy tale success story or stark reality of a newcomers struggle. He chooses whichever suits him for a particular sequence. The only thing that he does well is editing and should reuturn to doing that. Dialogues are good.

Coming to the performances, Rajpal Yadav towers above all. He is the saving grace of the movie. Antara Mali is adequate and to an extent dissappointing after promising much in Company and

Road. There is no justificalion to her selfish relationship with Rajpal. Govind Namdeo, Sudhir and Rita Bhaduri are good. Raman Trikha is so so.

Production values are shoddy but the two stuational songs ´Tu Ban Jayegi Madhuri´ and ´Rumi Sahib´ are successful in lifting the movie somewhat .

Overall, Main Madhuri Dixit Banna Chahti Hoon will not be able to emulate even the outcome of, Darna Mana Hai. Mr. Ram Gopal Verma one of the best directors of today should realise that he has launched enough assistants, and it is time he directs a few more of his Verma Corporation,

Entertainment One, ventures.
