Hitesh Sonik and his team made a good impression in ‘Pyar Ka Punchnama’ (2011) and now he returns for another youthful romantic film Akaash Vani this time supported by his wife Sunidhi Chauhan who is the playback singer for two songs in the album. For her fans, her inclusion here already heightens the interest factor because she is such a strong performer when it matters! Interestingly the lyrics are written by Luv Ranjan who is also the director for the film so clearly the music is important to him. Can Hitesh hit the right notes with his audience?

The opening minute of “Pad Gaye Ji” sounds out of this world thanks to a melodious piano piece by Hitesh and K.K’s mesmerizing vocals. The music is slow, soft and sensual until the chorus rocks and the emotions fly high. In the next stanza the guitar and drums take over as K.K. is joined by an equally sensuous Sunidhi Chauhan and together they weave the magic for Hitesh in this well written (Luv Ranjan) love song. The combination of soft stanzas and chorus highs works well in this longish song although it never bores thanks to a good mix of instrumentation during the interludes. Sweet.

“Crazy Lover” is instant HIT material! The music is fun and peppy with addictive beats mixed in with electronic trumpet loops. But it’s the combination of the lively singing (Vishal and Sunidhi) and the outrageously amusing lyrics that take this song to another level. Insanely catchy and addictive, this song will put a smile on your face every time you give it a listen. Playlist hogger!

“Bas Main Aur Tu” is a breezy romantic song with Hitesh using only the acoustic guitar to give a very simple effect. Nikhil D’Souza provides soft vocals and the lyrics are easy on the ears. This is one of those songs you can relax to any time any place. “Bas Main Aur Tu (Reprise)” comes later but it’s my preferred version as Hitesh adds a marvelous harmonica here along with that finger clicking noise. All in all a perfect lounge song to chill to.

“Rumani” has a split personality like the opening song with some devilish beats added into the pot for good measure. It’s soft and classy in the stanza portions but ignites into masti-ful life as soon as the chorus kicks in and the effect is a delight on the ears! The song also marks a sensational debut for Thomson Andrews who sings alongside a sexy sounding Shalami Kholgade. These guys deserve next level praise for making the song sound so real and effortless. Lyrics are another highlight. This is possibly the best of the album… JUST AWESOME!

“Tera Mera Naam” is a customary sad song where the piano weeps alongside the viola but the guitar strums carry hope with the uplifting percussions. There’s certainly plenty of emotions here so Hitesh brings out the big guns in the singing department and there’s probably no bigger than Shafqat Amanat Ali when it comes to soulful and touching vocals. If you are a fan of his then you will enjoy this song for sure.

If you like new age romantic songs or just enjoy chilled out music then you should give Akaash Vani a try. It’s one of those soundtracks you could easy ignore and forget but give it a chance and you will be glad you did as it will grow on you like old wine. Hitesh Sonik might not be a household name but he’s worked with the best composers out there (Vishal Bhardwaj) and his experience brings freshness to a genre that has had stale music of late. Kudos to Mr Sonik and his team.
