Opinion Poll: Do Shahid and Sonam share good chemistry onscreen in Mausam?

Shahid Kapoor, Pritam (Music Director) and Irshaad Kamil (Lyricist) makes a deadly combination that provided the biggest musical blockbuster in 2007 in the name of "Jab We Met”, the songs of which are played till date. This time they join hands again to re-create the magic in Pankaj Kapur's directorial debut Mausam. It’s the most prestigious project till date for both Shahid and Pankaj Kapur, the foremost reason being, it sees the debutant of Pankaj Kapur as a director and a writer, also the son and father will be sharing the screen space together for the first time since Shahid made his debut through Ishq Vishk (2003). Let’s see if they can make the album do 'Mauja Hi Mauja'!!

A look at the CD cover and one sees a whopping 13 tracks waiting to be heard. With 6 originals and few reprises including some Tiger Style Remix (remember Bhootni Ke Tiger Style Mix by Mika) and a brilliant Mehfil Mix helmed by Wadali Brothers, you brace yourself to listen to a chartbuster soundtrack.

Shahid Mallya, after Naino Wali Whiskey (Sahi Dhandhe Galat Bande) and Do Dhaari Talwaar (Mere Brother Ki Dulhan) is all set to showcase what genre suits his voice best with the album opener "Rabba Main To Mar Gaya Oye". Pritam is known as the "King" of romance and this is a trademark Pritam tune which one just wish could be played in loop for hours at stretch. It’s a smooth beginning for Mausam with an innocent, pleasant sounding track easy on ears. Rest assured, the song will find a definite inclusion in all the 'Love Compilation' albums in months to come.

After listening Rabba in the voice of Shahid Mallya, I was wondering as to how the song would sound in the voice of Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, and Pritam just put an end to all my imaginations by “Rabba Main To Mar Gaya Oye II” sung by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan. The experience matters here and so does the composer-singer combination which results in a song that is better than the original one. I wonder why Pritam chose Shahid over Rahat, who provides new dimensions to the song with his own innocent style and it slightly reminds me of "Aaj Din Chadeya" from Love Aaj Kal. Don't miss this one!

The film marks coming together of Mika and Pritam (after Thank You), something that always works, add to this Irshad Kamil's super-cool lyrics and Shahid's exuberant dance skills, you have the second track of the album, "Saj Dhaj ke Tashan Me Rehna".The credentials says Mika and Pankaj Kapur(only 1 line though) , the picturisation of the song is on the lines of 'Bhootni Ke' from 'Singh Is King ' and the musical arrangements at places are similar to 'Nagada Nagada' from Jab We Met, but nevertheless, it has 'Hit' written all over it. A 'masala' track that has just the right recipe of 'bhangra' beats, Punjabi-Western arrangements and some very spirited singing by Mika. The song returns back in “Sajh Dhaj Ke (Club Mix)” by Tiger Style and “Sajh Dhaj Ke (Desi Mix)” by Tiger Style. Both the songs have 'plug-it-on-and-dance' flavour that is applicable for dance floors as much as marriage celebrations.

As you move further, “Ik Tu Hi Tu Hi” will captivate your mind and surprisingly the original is led by Hans Raj Hans who made a comeback from Tumba Tumba in Patiala House this year. It’s a sad-classical song that lasts for more than 7 minutes (a rarity today) and strikes a chord instantly. The chorus part in the song has a trademark Pritam style and is super addictive. A song that will prove to be a 'lambi race ka ghoda' and will find a special place in the music directory of all the listeners.

If the composer is Pritam, you expect few reprise versions and “Ik Tu Hi Tu Hi (Reprise Version)” by Shahid Mallya is worth a listen. Check out his voice during the high notes, it’s simply outstanding. He shows his versatility in this one with absolute brilliance.

If both the versions were enough to create magic, here comes the best of the lot, “Ik Tu Hi Tu Hi (Mehfil Mix)” by the talented Wadali Brothers who recently gave a hit in 'Aey Rangrez Mere' from the movie 'Tanu Weds Manu’. The track is hard to resist and indeed is the best of the three versions with the chorus part being sung by Wadali Brothers themselves. I would be disappointed if a video is not picturised on this one. However; all the three versions have separate target audience and will grow more and more with time. A must hear (all 3).

Next in the offering is “Poore Se Zara Sa Kam Hain” by Ustaad Rashid Khan, who helmed Aaoge Jab Tum Saajna from Jab We Met under composer Sandesh Shandilya. The song starts with a long alaap, so one gets ready for another epic-classical and as it progresses, Irshad Kamil gets his poetry in motion and Rashid Khan with his heart-touching-soulful voice will make you speechless. The song will make you fall in love with it and the only thing that goes against the song is its short duration which makes u wanting for more. Brilliant Again!

“Aaga Lage Us Aag Ko” by Karsan Sargathia who despite spending a long time in the industry hasn't got the required appreciation, he has previously sung in movies like Fiza and Ab tumhare hawale watan saathiyo but failed to make an impact. This one is an unusual track and may be used more as a background score post interval. Nothing much special to offer in this one as an audio and will work well along the narration of the movie.

By this time, the expectations have reached a scorching high and the last original track provides the finish that is required out of an album like this. The 6th track named “Mallo Malli” is a fast paced funky track, sung by Tochi Raina, who has given hits like Iktaara from Wake Up Sid and most recently Saibo from Shor in the City. When the name of the track says 'Mallo Malli’, you get ready for something different to be offered and the combination of Pritam and Irshaad Kamil provides yet another song that will definitely find popularity, especially among the youth. Any other day and the song could have been placed under the credentials of A.R.Rahman, especially due to the start and then the Punjabi vocals with high western beats including a short rapping session by Hard Kaur.It will be interesting to see Shahid dance to the tune of Mallo Malli.

“Mallo Malli II” by Lehmber Hussainpuri, the voice behind Saddi Gali from Tanu Weds Manu and Bhoot Aaya in Faltu is as impressive as the original one. The Punjabi tadka has moved up a level more due to Lehmber Hussainpuri solid Punjabi voice. Worth a hear. “Mallo Malli Remix” is a usual remix which will make you tap your feet and will prove to be a good dance number in the clubs and DJ nights.

Phew!! 13 tracks and every single track is worth checking out at least once.'Mausam' is Pritam's best work in 2011 and the album shows that he is going to rule the music industry for years to come. The variety of singers used in the album provides a fresh feel to it and breaks the monotony from the usual repeated remix versions. The choice of singers for each and every song is really appreciable. With more than a month for the movie release; 'Rabba' and 'Sajh Dhaj Ke' will be seen topping the charts, whilst 'Ek Tu Hi Tu Hi','Mallo Malli' and 'Poore Se Zara Sa Kam Hain’ will grow with time and more once their video is out. Strongly Recommended!!
