Nagesh Kukunoor’s next film Aashyein (meaning ‘hope’), whose title is inspired from the popular song in his previous Iqbal, is all set to release shortly.

The director of some intriguing movies such as Dor hopes to quash memories of his last film Bombay To Bangkok with one of his ‘dream projects’ in Aashayein starring John Abraham and TV actress, Sonal Sehgal. The cast also includes Vikram Inamdar, Sonali Sachdev, Farida Jalal, Girish Karnad and Anahita Nair (Chak De India fame).

The story revolves around Rahul Singh (John Abraham), a compulsive gambler who wins Rs. 20 million from a bet and throws a party to celebrate. Everyone has a good time drinking and partying till late night during which Rahul proposes to Nafisa (Sonal Sehgal). He announces their engagement to all present, then collapses on the floor.

In hospital, he learns that he has only 90 days to live. Wanting to make the most of his last days, he leaves everything behind and moves into a soothing hospice. The inmates he meets change his outlook on life. As his relationships grow with each one of them, Rahul tries to rise above his own needs and live life to the fullest, learning from the courage of those around him.

Says Director Nagesh Kukunoor “Aashayein has always been my dream project and I am extremely excited to do this film. The word Aashayein means hope. It is one of those words that struck in my mind during Iqbal (Aashayein was the theme song from Iqbal). There are lots of up and downs in the film but eventually while watching the film you'll understand how the title is so apt."

Incidentally the music by Salim Sulaiman promises to build on their previous success, particularly Chak De India. Anyone who has seen the promo for Aashayein featuring the brilliant track “Ab Hai Ujala” cannot fail but be impressed by the talented duo, it undeniably brings out the ‘hope’ theme of the movie with an uplifting tune that is as enjoyable as it is thought provoking

Anyone wanting a break from the current mould of bollywood ‘high in gloss, low in substance’ movies should keep an eye out for Aashayein.
