Vaastav (the reality) is Jatin-Lalit’s fifth album this year. Two of the previous four releases, Sarfarosh and Sangharsh were pretty good albums. The other two, Silsila Hai Pyaar Ka and Pyaar Koi Khel Nahin were disappointments. Vaastav will join SHPK and PKKN as another disappointment. Vaastav offers only a couple of hummable tunes, and even those couple of songs sound very much like typical J-L songs.

Meri Duniya Hai” has two versions, a duet by Sonu Nigam and Kavita Krishnamurthy, and a solo by Sonu Nigam. The song is just another love duet, not a lot of variety in the lyrics or music. In fact, I found the tune and the beats to be very similar to “Mujhe Raat Din” from Sangharsh, which is ten times better compared to what we have here.

Kavita appears again in “Tere Pyar Ne”, this number also has another version, sung by Kumar Sanu. This can pass as the best song of the album, but mind you; that doesn’t mean the song is a whole lot to rave about. The tune has a nice flow to it which makes it better than the other songs in the album, but the lyrics are just like any other romantic songs of today’s times.

Vaastav has the Mumbai underworld as its backdrop, so there has to be a sadak-chhaap song, right? “Apni To Nikal Padi” is sung by Kumar Sanu and a newcomer Atul Kale. This number is not catchy as some other tapori songs in this category like “Kallu Mama” for example. Kumar Sanu just doesn’t fit in this song. If Abhijeet or even Sonu Nigam were selected for this song it would’ve been at least passable.

Rahul Ranade has given music for two music pieces, appropriately titled “Vaastav Theme I” and “Vaastav Theme II.” The two music pieces can’t be called catchy, but they’ll probably fit in the background of some scenes in the film, or even in the opening credits.

There’s an aarti sung by Ravindra Saathe that’s included in the album as well, not much write about it though.

Jawani Se Ab Jung” is sung by Preetha Mazumdar, a newcomer I suppose. The song is a cabaret number and will most likely be picturized on Namarata Shirodkar, who plays a prostitute in the film. This is just a filler song, not a good song to start off a singing career either.

Finally we have “Har Taraf Yeh Hai Shor” sung by Vinod Rathod and Atul Kale. The song seems to take place on janam-ashthmi since it has a lot of reference to Lord Krishna. One might enjoy the song while watching the film, but it’s definitely not something I’d listen to more than maybe once.

Vaastav – the album is a disappointment. However, Vaastav – the film will something to look forward to. Sanju baba as an underworld gangster just tells you that you’re in store for a good perfromance from him. Mahesh Manjrekar, I hear is an awesome director who has made some good films in Marathi, including a film about AIDS, which was India’s first film on that subject. So, don’t hurry to your music shop to purchase the CD/cassette for Vaastav, but I think you’ll want to hurry to your cinema halls to watch Vaastav once it releases.
