Anu Malik and Javed Akhtar may not be in top form with this new movie soundtrack but their effort shines through. Wajood, starring Madhuri Dixit, Nana Patekar, Ramya, and Mukul Dev, is different. Anu experiments with different tunes and different beats. The result, while not outstanding, is certainly commendable. Nice singing and catchy tunes make up for the weaker lyrics.

The album starts out with a rustic, racy tune called Ki Toot Gayi, sung by Sapna Awasthi and Kavita Krishnamurthi. While the song takes a couple of listenings to get used to, once you do, it will stick to you like glue. Hopefully, the song will have a good dance number by Madhuri Dixit or even Ramya, who showed much dancing promise in her Yash Raj directed debut Parampara.

The next song is very nice. Called Sanam Hum Tumpe, the song could be a sequel to Rajesh Roshan's Pal Beet Gaya from Dastak. The lyrics take some getting used to but the tune is catchy. The singing is mediocre on Udit Narayan's part but Kavita, once again, does a fine job.

Main Sochta Hoon is the best song on the album and one of my favorites of 1998. It's very similar to Jatin - Lalit's Ek Din Aap from Yes Boss. The singing is very good by Kumar Sanu and is up to the mark by Alka Yagnik.

Side two gets off to a bad start with Main Kya Karooon. A weird chorus, and stupid lyrics don't help. Singing is commendable by Alka and the song has a rustic beat like Ki Toot Gayi, but alas, the song gets on one's nerves VERY fast. Not so hot with this crappy song, Anu. Hopefully, the song will have a great dance with Madhuri or Ramya to enhance it's on screen appeal.

Kaise Bataoon is sheer poetry to the ears. The dialogue is spoken very well by the commanding Nana Patekar and is set to soothing background music. This "song" is just fantastic!

The album ends on a great note with Aur Hum Tum, another slow and romantic song very much like Main Sochta Hoon. The singing, is once again, great by Kumar Sanu and very nice by Alka Yagnik.

All in all, this album is definitely buyable. It takes some listens to get used to. However, once you listen to it a few times, you will begin to like it. The film stars Madhuri Dixit and Nana Patekar. Ramya plays a pivotal role in the film and critics are already raving about her performance, Mukul Dev also appears. The film's story is very serious and director N. Chandra, who has been known to give the public some great films (Tezaab), is heavily banking on this film's success. Hopefully, the film will be something to rave about. I know I'm looking forward to it.
