Mithoon challenges A.R Rahman this week, displacing him from his Number One position, by having two entries from the musically acclaimed Lamhaa. If the soundtrack was released just after Anwar, it wouldn’t have made such an impact as it can easily be coined as ‘Anwar 2’. Instead of going with the trendy voices, music directors should take notice of Dr. Palash Sen, from the Euphoria band, who has added his own touch in `Main Kaun Hoon`. Himesh Reshammiya struggles and still does the honours with ‘Rabba Luck Barsa’ as the singer-composer, and in ‘Tum Chain Ho’ as the music director. Pritam’s ‘Sajde’ is weak compared to his earlier romantic tracks such as ‘Teri Ore’ but still manages to find a spot, thanks to its simplicity and its clean programming. Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy enjoys moderate success with ‘I Love Amreeka’.

Last week’s releases

Once Upon A Time in Mumbai

Music: Pritam, Lyrics: Irshad Kamil, Amitabh Bhattacharya, Nilesh Mishra

Pritam has become the new Anu Malik, grabbing in all the hottest projects, after years of over-working on multiple assignments at the same time. The retro-style music is heard in ‘Pee Loon’, ‘Tum Jo Aaye’ and the re-worked ‘Parda’. One wonders if the programming could have been better to suit the era of the movie. Mohit Chauhan, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and Tulsi Kumar also do a commendable job, while Karthik gets a solo in the rehash of Pritam’s hits in ‘I Am In Love’. Once upon a time, Pritam worked harder on his music, but there has been a slight decline in his creativity recently.

Udaan

Music: Amit Trivedi, Lyrics: Amitabh Bhattacharya

Amit Trivedi is offered another interesting project and produces some upbeat songs, however, there is some magic missing. Some of the tunes are vague, the singing is below par and the orchestration is straight from a garage band. The Theme (Felix Hug) is exceptional, with titling music and sheer originality. Most of songs follow a situation, are heavily youth oriented and fits the theme of the movie. An average effort from the composer who gave us Dev.D and Aamir!
