State education director O P Sharma said the decision to ban singing and playing of such "nasty songs" having corrupting influence on the student community and others was taken in the wake of flood of complaints by the government from various sections of the society.

Several intellectuals during their meetings with the Chief Minister, Education Ministers and senior governemnt officers had also sought ban on such "uncivilised" songs, official sources said.

Mr Sharma said in future no filmy songs would be sung or played during official functions and warned of strict action against violators.

However, religious and patriotic songs from films would be exempt from the ban.
