Islamabad, July 20 (PTI) A film highlighting the plight of hundreds of Indians and Pakistanis languishing in jails in the two countries has been screened here for an audience that included Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani. Movie 'Ramchand Pakistani', directed by Pakistan's Mehreen Jabbar and starring Indian actress Nandita Das, depicts the problems faced by a Pakistani Dalit boy named Ramchand and his father after they mistakenly cross the border with India and are imprisoned.

Gilani, who watched the film with Information and Broadcasting Minister Sherry Rehman, federal secretaries and senior officials at the Pakistan National Council of Arts auditorium on Friday night, said it reflected the plight of hundreds of Indians and Pakistanis imprisoned without committing any crimes.

"Although some prisoners are genuinely guilty, a huge proportion in jails was not guilty of any crime," he said, adding the movie was a true representation of the peace process with India.

Gilani, who lists Aishwarya Rai and Shah Rukh Khan as his favourite film stars, said: 'Ramchand Pakistani' would help bridge the gap between India and Pakistan.

A committee of retired judges set up by India and Pakistan to recommend ways to expedite the release of prisoners will also look into "false confinements" and negotiate the release of those who are innocent, said Gilani, who himself was imprisoned for nearly five years by the regime of President Pervez Musharraf.

In the film, Ramchand (portrayed by Syed Fazal Hussain) leaves his home in Pakistan's Sindh province after a row with his mother Champa (Nandita Das) over her not giving him a full cup of tea.
